Mount Rushmore

August 14, 2013

Very different from when we stopped here years ago when all you could do was drive up to it, look at it, say "wow" and drive away.  Now of course, there is a parking garage, souvenirs, cafe, walking tours (ranger and self guided) etc.,  But it does still rate a WOW.  We decided to take a walking tour and I'm glad we did.  We got some great views of the memorial as well as the rest of the facility (ampitheater, museum, etc).  We went back at night for the lighting ceremony, and it was very moving.  A Ranger spoke, reminding us why each of the 4 presidents was there, and at the end he invited all current and former military members to come to the stage where he had them introduce themselves and state what branch of service they're from.  Then we all sang the national anthem and applauded them.  All of this directly under the memorial.  Really very moving.

Great vantage point from our walking tour.
