03/23-29/2012

Great trip from Louisiana to Florida.  Lots of bridges (the Atchafalaya Bridge is 18.2 miles long !!) with green, green swamps  and bright blue skies. No 'gators though!  We arrived at the Milton Gulf Pines KOA late afternoon, and got set up under blue skies and 80 degrees.  Another very nice KOA with a pool, cable, wi-fi - very quiet and very laid back.

Checked out Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Beach - stunning area with bright white sand (one housing development is called "Sugar Bowl"), and beautiful green water (the area is known as the emerald coast). Pensacola Beach itself was lively with lots of tourists and locals soaking up the sun. We took a short break to enjoy the beach and the view (the water was pretty warm), then drove on through the state park - much quieter.

We toured NAS Pensacola and Hurlburt Field, both of which are right on the water, so they have their own beachfront property.  Just beautiful.  One day we went to drive a scenic route (my navigation skills failed, so we totally missed it) but while we were out, we did check out NAS Whiting Field which was not huge, but much bigger than we expected,  as it's off in the middle of nowhere.  It's a helicopter training base for all branches of service.

All in all a nice quiet week.  I've had a cold all week, so it gave me a chance to recharge, since I'm (we're) not sleeping well.

Tomorrow we're off to a campground at Carabelle.   We're taking the scenic route, so it should be a nice drive, right along the coast.
