We left Birch Hill mid morning Friday, and had a pretty uneventful trip to Mackinaw City, MI. We're staying at the Mackinaw City KOA, and it's a nice, quite little campground (just our speed). Mike did a bang-up (oops -sorry, wrong choice of words) super job getting us through some pretty tight quarters and into our site. We took it easy the rest of the day, grilled some burgers, played cards (2-zip, as usual), then enjoyed a campfire.
This morning we decided to check out Mackinaw City. It's actually a fairly small town, but there's a lot going on since it's where the Mackinac Bridge begins, and the ferries to Mackinac Island depart/return. Lots of eateries, clothing shops, etc., as expected. What is it with Michigan and fudge?? It's everywhere! We also took a ride through the "Tunnel of Trees", a scenic byway from Cross Village to Harbor Springs. It reminded me a lot of old Maine roads - narrow, the roadway butted by huge trees that meet over the road, giving it a tunnel effect. It runs along the shore of Lake Michigan, so when we could see through the trees, there were some lovely views of the lake - water as far as we could see, as well as some gorgeous homes. Then we arrived at Harbor Springs, a beautiful small city on Lake Michigan, with all types of boats, sailboats, and yachts moored all along the beachfront at the city marina. ($$$$)
Tonight we're back home again, grilling and sitting by the campfire. (It's SO nice to be out of the rain!)
