Medicine Bow National Forest, WY

September 15, 2013

On Sunday, we drove from Victor, ID, to Evanston, WY, for the night to break up the trip.  We never know what we're going to run into when we're traveling, so it's always interesting.  Stopping traffic to herd sheep is a new one.

Next day, we made the drive to Riverside/Encampment, WY so that Mike could take a look at some of his favorite haunts from years gone by.  We're in a great little campground in Riverside (Lazy Acres), and just down the street from the Bear Trap Saloon and the Mangy Moose Saloon (which happens to be for sale, by the way).  We visited each one (just to see the changes!) and of course nothing stays the same.  But it was fun for both of us to see the places he's always talked about.  Today we went to Encampment where he and his friends Tom and Mitch used to hunt, and we even found the old road they took to a clearing where Mike got one of his deer way back when.  Funny, the roads are pretty nice now, asphalt with guard rails and scenic turnouts - very different.

Continental Divide

We continued on to the Sierra Madre Mountain Range in the Medicine Bow National Forest, and it was beautiful.  At one point, we were up over 10,000' and we crossed the Continental Divide again.

Deluxe Shepherd Accommodations (note the solar power)

Mirror Lake

Later we went to the Snowy Range and really enjoyed (another) Mirror Lake and Medicine Bow Peak (elev 12,000').
